The Friends History

The Friends of the Bloomingdale Public Library (IL)

Some folks that you should know… our Members.

The Friends have been exsistence since 1981. Our annual membership averages 30+ members of all ages. One of our members typed “Catalog Cards”  in the early 80’s when the books were kept in a garage and the Library was a double-wide trailer.  One member said  “the greatest gift is giving back to the community, when we moved here, this Library was an important resourse for us, now I can give back to insure that it’s here to give to future generations”.  Now the digital era has replaced card catalogs, but our mission is still the same.

The mission of the Friends is ” to work in partnership with library trustees and library staff to promote use of library resources by residents of the Bloomingdale community and to help raise funds for materials and services the library provides.”  They raise funds with Used Book Sales, Dine and Share Fundraisers, Painting, local dining events, donations and membership fees.  We are always coming up with new fundraising ideas, so check our website or follow us on Facebook to get the latest news!

Friends sort thousands of books for the Semi-Annual Book Sale

The Friends fund the Summer Reading Program, purchase T-Shirts for the children, as well as reading prizes for the most books read. They also help the Library with special purchases that are not in the Library Budget such as the Holiday Trees and Book Purchases for local collaborative reading program between Bloomingdale, Roselle, and Itasca – On the Same Page

Last year with the help of the Bloomingdale Lions, they purchase a Digital Reader for the visually impaired.  Bloomingdale is so fotunate to have resedents/Friends who are involved.

Friends  donate trees  annually for the Snowman Crossing

The Library is the best asset of our comminity, it’s an important resourse for all to use.  Some towns don’t have Friends for their Libraries and miss the benefits of the group.

If you need more information or want to join the Friends, apply online or stop by the library and get an application in the Business Office.  If you have questions, please email us at mybplFriends@gmail.com
